The Boxee excels at playing shared media.

It also excels as a unified remote control to switch between devices, etc. The Revue is great if you want to browse the web, or use a keyboard to search for shows, or watch Amazon Prime. More expensive than other solutions, but after you evaluate the capabilities, it is absolutely worth the price. One side of the Remote Control is as sleek and intuitive as an iPod. I cannot comment on this since I do not use it.

It automatically scrapes the movie art, descriptions, actors, etc.! However, if you need to, you can take full manual control of what is displayed for any show.

This box rocks! I use it to watch downloaded Movies and TV Series. Keyboard can get in the way sometimes if you really only need a remote for FF, etc. Since Logitech is not making them, there might not be any patches or tech-support for the future. If you know what you want to watch, this is not a problem. downloading and displaying movie posters). Media Player does not support Scraping (ie. Not a big issue, and it might simply be the distance from my router. Sometimes drops WiFi and I have to reconnect. I don't think they are being made any more, so if you can find them, they might even be cheaper. if this is your thing.Ī steal for the money. Logitech Media Player is a built-in app for connecting and playing networked files. Works with Amazon Prime (main reason I bought it) Although once I switch to the Boxee, I use the Boxee remote.Īllows you to browse the web (my wife loves this). I switch between Boxee, DirecTV, and XBox with it. Can be programmed to control TV, DVR, and an AVR (I don't use this last option so I cannot comment on it.) It is super convenient. I don't like that the Revue has been dropped from any future support though. I'm thinking I like Boxee the most, but it's lacking a Plex client (which isn't necessary as it can still play off the network), which brings me back to looking at the Revue.

I'd like to do Apple TV jailbroken, but the community seems far from figuring out how to do the ATV3, and the ATV2 is limited to 720p. And now the decision is between Boxee and the Revue. But if it's that awesome, I'll consider it too.ĮDIT: So it looks like Roku is tailing off. There's also Boxee, but that's $150, so I haven't really looked at it. And I understand Plex should offer the same nice visuals I've been experiencing with XBMC. Just to clarify, I don't need Plex specifically, but I'd like to seamlessly and quickly play files off my laptop with a nice interface. But I couldn't find anything about Plex for it. So it seems like a clear advantage over Roku, but please correct me if/where I'm (probably) wrong.įinally, I read about WD TV Live on here and it sounds like it supports the most file formats. From what I understand supports more file formats natively (like off USB). It also seems that the Revue does everything the Roku will do and more (web browser etc) - besides Hulu Plus, but I don't need that. The Revue (Google TV) has a Plex app as well so I assume it should put it on par with the Roku. And at that price point, I should consider the Logitech Revue and WD TV Live. But I also want the flexibility to play off USB directly. Roku seems like the obvious answer as it has a Plex app. My laptop has a quadcore i7 2.2 GHz, so the performance should be fine, especially with just one TV. But I know if I change to Plex I can use clients. I'm just looking for an easy way to play content without having to connect my laptop to the HDMI every time.Ĭurrently, I watch my TV shows and movies on XBMC on my laptop. I don't need any premium services (Hulu Plus, Netflix, etc). I'm looking for the ideal set top box for my TV.
